USGAA Finals Club of the Week - Setanta Gaelic Football Club

Getting their starts as a competition between cities, the North American County Board (NACB) National Championship goes back all the way to 1949; however, Gaelic sports have a much longer history in the United States. Even before the founding of the NACB Championship, which preceded the USGAA Finals, there are records of Gaelic Football being played in San Francisco’s Hyde Park as early as the 1850’s.

In 2001, Gaelic football had migrated south from San Francisco to San Diego’s Setanta Gaelic Football and Surf Club and brought together a group of men with no great dedication to anything except self-preservation and beer belly contemplation, forming the only Gaelic Football and Surf Club in the world! Since inception, the men’s football team has known great success with a USGAA Junior A championship in 2018; Junior B Championship in 2004, 2007, 2009, and 2017; and Junior C Championship in 2007.

With their success on the pitch, it would be easy to overlook their accomplishments off the pitch. The Setanta Gaelic Football and Surf Club exemplifies the values of athletic competition and community involvement. They bridge the gap between generations, incomes, political preference, and background to create a positive team culture and give back to the community they call home. Annually, the Men’s Gaelic football team joins forces with the Irish Outreach San Diego and the greater San Diego Gaelic Athletic Association to host the event “Irish You a Merry Christmas.” This event showcases authentic Irish music and dance while serving a gourmet meal to local school children in need as well as their families. No Christmas party would be complete without an Irish Santa passing out loads of presents to the children!

For 13 straight years, this San Diego team has traveled with two teams to the National Championships. Will they make it a 14th year and will they claim another championship? Join us August 23rd-25th at Morven Park in Leesburg, VA to find out!
